Happy girls are the prettiest girls

On Heartbreak and puppies

I know we are past Valentine's day, and heart themed everything is so passe now, but I am continuing my theme of heartbreak.

Tonight when I got home from work, my sweet baby girl Marlo was still in her crate, even though Billy was home, and she wouldn't come out of her crate to go potty with him. Baby girl got so excited to see her mommy {I am perfectly OK with this vernacular for my pets, as they are my fur babies, and I don't plan on having any real babies} so she got up and started to come see me...but then she started yelping in pain. She wasn't stepping on anything that I could see, so I coaxed her out of the crate, the yelping continuing, and made her lay down on the carpet. Her little bum was wiggling like crazy because she was so happy, but her leg muscles were shaking and twitching in her back left leg, and she would yelp any time she tried to support her weight.

Billy was over in a flash when he heard her cry, and we both sat with her for a minute trying to figure out what was wrong. I pressed on her paw pads, and no reaction, so it wasn't a cut or something stuck in there, so seeing as she didn't want to straighten her leg or put weight on it, we think it's join or muscle pain. The vet is closed, so I'm keeping her in the crate laying down until I can get her in tomorrow. Sad thing is, baby girl has got to go potty, but can't walk to the park with me, and refuses to go in the dirt patch outside our door or on the puppy pad inside. She just breaks my heart every time she starts yelping. It's not your normal yip of a dog in pain, no, English Bulldogs apparently bay/bark/squeak or something, and it's heart wrenching. I can't imagine how parents get through their real children's illnesses, broken bones, and every day pain that they can't fix. All I want to do is make her better!

So for now, I sit and worry. Hopefully this Audrey quote can make me feel better eventually. Happy Friday to everyone else! I added extra Audrey photos with puppies because of Marlo.

Finding someone to accept you as you are, support you 100%, love you infinitely, be your shoulder to cry on and your ear to listen is probably what drives many of us to find our mates. I found my soul mate in Billy, and I didn't even believe in the thing before meeting him because of my previous experiences with love. Sometimes you have to have a broken heart in order to find the one who can make you whole.

"Your heart just breaks, that's all. But you can't judge or point fingers. You just have to be lucky enough to find someone who appreciates you."

I am told that I look like Hilary Duff on a fairly regular basis. Maybe it's the cheekbones, the nose, the shape of the eyes, the high forehead, and the big smile, I don't know exactly, but it doesn't bother me. I always want to laugh when people tell me "I don't know if anyone has ever told you...but you look like Hilary Duff!" I want to pat them on the shoulder while smiling encouragingly and tell them, "why, yes, yes I have been told I look like Hilary Duff, but thank you for telling me!" It's just like when I was in middle school and people would give me their best Rocky impression and shout in a bad Sly Stallone accent "Yoooooooooo Adriaaaannn!" I would feign surprise, and tell them as innocently as I could that they were the first person to ever say that to me.

There are so many HD pictures I see floating around the web that I make Billy look at to concur that it does, in fact, look a whole lot like myself. What makes me laugh is that I look different in practically every picture I take, so it's strange that I look like her in so many photos.

Once, when I was shopping art Charles David shoes in the mall, the sales girl told me I looked like Hilary, and she had been "this close {hold fingers close together}" to texting her coworkers to let them know she had Hilary in the store. Now, I had bad hair, and my outfit was horribly outdated, so not worthy of Ms. Duff's taste, so I just laughed it off instead of pretending to be her for free shoes.
{Charles David shoes, Forever 21 dress}

What do you think, do I look that much like Hilary Duff that you would mistake us?

Glee and heartbreak

Favorite Glee quote to-date that completely sums up my love for baked goodies and treats, regardless of how good or bad they may be.

Lauren: "By the way, these candies you gave me--they sucked."
Puck: "But you ate all of them."
Lauren: "I had to make sure they all sucked."

That folks, is why I cannot be trusted around any candy, cookie, brownie, or cake. I ask Billy to hide any treats that make it into the house, and if I happen to find them, he is in trouble.

Now, to fill you in on my house hunting, because I had more comments and inquiries regarding the hunt than I had imagined I would generate! So that house I posted about last week? Yeah, I got to tour it. Annnnnd I was very happy to find out it was already under contract. Because one entire side of the garage was covered in black mold. And crumbling in spots from massive water damage. From the flat roof that was collecting pools of water. That would run down the sides of the house. And cause the foundation to sink on two sides. Effectively bowing house. Yeah, I wasn't heart broken at all.

Actually, I've moved on. To this little beauty that is less than a mile from Billy's parents' house. Which is totally okay with me, I love them to pieces and we already spend plenty of time over there with them.

My friend Diane, a recent home buyer herself, told me not to get emotional in the house hunting process, that many homes won't work out and it's better to not get my heart set on anything. She is however, one of my oldest friends, having known each other for 14 years, and she acknowledged that my personality is very, for lack of a better term, like a steam roller. Once my heart is set on something, there is very little that will stop me from trying to get it. I am driven, persistent, and determined to do anything in my power for whatever I am after. I know I am going to get my heart broken a few times in this process. So get this: this little house is a short sale, and it needs to be sold on Sunday. Yeah, funny, right? I haven't even gotten pre-approved yet, or seen it in person, and I've got my mind made up that I just have to have it. If that doesn't have heart break written all over it, I don't know what does.

This saga is to be continued....

Tuesday edition

Things I learned this weekend
~Swimming in the rain really isn't as bad as I thought it would be, considering the pool was toasty warm! Though the snow on the foothills made me wonder why I was crazy enough to swim outside at all!
~Jim, Nicole's dad, is an excellent coach, and helped me improve my swimming form. I swam about 1200 yards, which is double what I normally swim!
~I really dislike when a Realtor won't get back to me about a house tour. Come on, you think they would want to get paid, right?
~It's amazing how different a house can look in person from online.
~I got to tour the house I posted last week...let's say I'm not in the least heartbroken that it's already under contract. {hello, black mold and foundation sinking on each side of the house!}
~Spending a day off with my hubby and his family is fantastic fun. Though I eat far too much when I am with them.
~Haven't heard back from the mortgage company about our pre-approval process, fingers crossed!

Sorry I missed my Monday post! Instead of blogging, I had a blast spending time with Billy, having brunch with his family, entertaining my 2 year old nephew, touring houses, and eating. eating. eating. You would think I would have been rearing to go to the gym this morning after the doughnuts, frozen yogurt, pizza, and French toast I consumed this weekend, but I skipped it in favor of sleeping in next to my #1 man today. I did run 5 miles yesterday, and plan on hitting a 4 mile hill loop tomorrow, so I will be back at it soon :)

How was your weekend? Did you overeat too? Hopefully you had a blast doing whatever it was you did!

Friday night fancies

I had today off of work, it was lovely!

This morning I ran on a treadmill with Nicole because it was POURING rain outside, and not ideal running conditions. I think my California sunshine and nice weather moved east, as my Kansas city blogger friends are reporting awesome sunny weather, while I have been dealing with 5 days of rain. I want it back! We could only push for 3 miles because treadmills, after running outside for so long, are incredibly boring. It was fantastic to hang with her though, she is a serious day maker! If not for Nicole, I would sleep in more often and run less, I would eat badly more often, rather than think "what would Nicole do", I would get down on myself when I mess up or skip a workout, rather than celebrate my successes. She's that good you guys.

I  then dropped off a very thick folder of documents and very telling financial information to a mortgage broker for our pre-approval process. You guys, I am really pushing this trying to buy a house thing, even though I am 98% certain we won't get approved for enough to buy a house we would be satisfied with, and we would be stretched uber thin financially. When I get an idea, I run with it. I am a steam roller. I will do anything and everything in my power to realize my dream, goal or idea, and can be quite impulsive, persistent, and often unrealistic. Billy thinks this is one of those times. We will hear back in a week or so, I will keep you posted.

I had nothing to do for hours, so I watched The Runaways, and saw that my friend Eric Callero had a non-speaking part for a few minutes!! In first Joan Jett scene in the vintage shop, he's the rockabilly guy leaning on the counter that Joan says she wants what he is wearing. I worked with him on a short film a few years ago (I did hair, he acted) and I am loving following his career! His most notable reoccurring role has been as Cody Deveraux, a moody vampire on the Tonight show with Conan O'Brien.

I then sort of watched The Last Song while I played with makeup and took pictures of myself in the bathroom. I know, so weird. I have to express myself artistically every once in awhile, and since I don't have any photo shoots or creative weddings coming up anytime soon, I was my own guinea pig! I went for smoky eyes and fun hair. Here are some of my favorites, they are all head shots, as I didn't have anything fun to play dress up in, which I still occasionally do! I used my Olympus Pen PL1 camera, no flash with crappy bathroom lighting and then cropped all the photos on the computer. Most of the color photos were taken using the e-portrait setting, which does minor corrections on the camera to smooth out skin texture and erase any flaws, it's fantastic! You can tell the difference between the b&w grainy film texture where I have major under eye bags and the color one next to it where the bags are noticeably smoother :)

I then met up for coffee with a friend and one of her friends to talk about house buying stuff. They shared their annoyances, what worked, what didn't and let me know what to expect for whenever I do buy a house. It was nice picking their brains and allowing them to share their newly gained knowledge with me.

Now, I am couching it up with the hubby, enjoying a very lazy night in.

What are your weekend plans?

On Sex Appeal

Happy Friday lovelies! I hope you have had a great week and are looking forward to the weekend. This week seemed especially long to me for some reason. I am very excited to have today and next Monday off, as the kiddos I nanny for have a long Presidents weekend and are away skiing in Tahoe. I still work Saturday and Sunday, but having some time to myself is a wonderful commodity I don't take for granted.

I love what Audrey has to say about sex appeal not always being overt and in your face as much of our pop culture in this generation seems to believe, but more demure, innocent even. Can you be as sexy in an apple orchard as in Agent Provocateur in the bedroom?

"There is more to sex appeal than just measurements. I don't need a bedroom to prove my womanliness. I can convey just as much sex appeal, picking apples off a tree or standing in the rain."

Spin set list

One of my 101 in 1001 things is to become a certified spin instructor. Why not get paid to do something I love and already participate in several times a week? I wanted to get pumped up before I register for the certification class, so I created my own set list for a spin class I may one day teach. My personal favorite is a rolling hills workout. I love the intense climbs followed by downhill recovery, then fast flat work until the next hill, so that's the sort of set list I went for. What do you think? Would it make you excited to cycle with me?

Magic-- B.O.B ft Rivers Cuomo {3:30} Quick warm up, get the blood pumping with a beginning push point

Radioactive-- Kings of Leon {3:27} Increase resistance to 6, pick up at the chorus with a sprint, then recover, repeat

Love the way you lie-- Eminem ft Rihanna {4:23} Add resistance to an 8 for a hill climb! Add resistance every time Rihanna comes in until you get to your level 10, it better be hard to pedal on the beat!

Blah Blah Blah-- Ke$ha ft 3Oh!3 {2:52} Release tension to a 6, racing downhill toward flat work, lemme see you work!

Raise your glass-- Pink {3:23} Flat road! Recover for 40 seconds. Sprint chorus, recover, sprint again.

Sail--Awolnation {4:01} Slow your legs, increase resistance to get on the beat for the next hill, add more tension every 30 seconds for a major 4 minute killer at a level 9

Electric Feel-- MGMT {3:50} Still on a hill, just not as steep. Decrease resistance to an 8, recover, then pick up speed to a run on chorus, repeat

Moneygrabber-- Fitz and the Tantrums {3:02} Release the tension back to a 6! Flat road, sprint on the chorus, recover, repeat.

Mercy-- Duffy {3:48} Base of a hill. Stand and sprint the chorus, gradually add resistance up to an 8 when you sit

Airplanes-- B.O.B. ft Hayley Williams {3:01} Release out all the tension, keep the legs rolling, cool down and stretch time

Good job!! You made it through my crazy 58 minute spin set list! If anyone decides to use this playlist for their own workout, let me know how it goes!!

Eat it up

{WARNING: if you're on a diet and susceptible to cravings induced by yummy pictures, stop reading now!}

Because I am always trying to eat healthy, and failing often. Because I crave baked goodies and chocolate like every second of the day. Because I'm supposed to be good, but want to be bad bad bad. Because these quotes were awesome and the photos made me drool. Enjoy. You're welcome <3

“The most important things to do in the world are to get something to eat, something to drink and somebody to love you.” -- Brenda Ueland

“Eat, drink, and be merry. For tomorrow we die.” -- American Proverb

“When having a smackerel of something with a friend, don't eat so much that you get stuck in the doorway trying to get out.” -- Winnie the Pooh

“Eat to live, not live to eat.” -- Benjamin Franklin

“Eating words has never given me indigestion.” -- Winston Churchill

“Temperance: Eat and carouse with Bacchus, or munch dry bread with Jesus, but don't sit down without one of the gods.” -- D.H. Lawrence

“And do as adversaries do in law, strive mightily, but eat and drink as friends.” -- William Shakespeare

“A crust eaten in peace is better than a banquet partaken in anxiety.” -- Aesop

“You eat, in dreams, the custard of the day.” -- Alexander Pope

Happy just like any other day of the year!

Hiya lovelies, hope everyone had a fabulous weekend! Today, as you all know, if a saint's day recognized by most Americans as the day you tell your family, friends, spouse, or partner how much you love them. In my world, every day is celebrated in this manner, and so for 10 years running now I am not celebrating the big old red and pink heart day. So happy February 14th, y'all, just another day to say "I love you" to those who matter.

Because today's theme is hearts, I want to share with you a little something that has been on my heart lately-- Buying my first home. I dream about owning my own home on a daily basis. I imagine the kind of house I would like to buy, and then am reminded of the kind of house {or cardboard box} I can actually afford. I am sure most of you know that metropolitan areas of California have incredibly high home prices, even in this "Buyer's marker" we supposedly are in. This is the cute little home I am lusting after this week, and it's {almost} affordable--if I had a nice heft savings for a down payment haha
Billy had a list of requirements when looking for a house, whereas I had one: a house. His list included 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a 2 car garage, some sort of backyard space, and no HOA. This house hits all of our desires, for what I consider a very low price of $290,999. It was on the market and quickly bough last May. I loved it then, so when I saw it back up I thought "well maybe it's meant to be!" as I did for Marlo when I saw her back on Petfinder after being adopted and returned. Look how that turned out! {awesome, btw.}

What I learned this weekend
~One of my good friends is being criticized for her new healthy habits and lifestyle changes, which just breaks my heart that her positive changes would bring unhappiness to her.
~My beautiful sunny weather is taking a break for a rainstorm this week, my mood with it
~I am incredibly impulsive and driven when I want something. See: house above
~Billy as usual is an amazing husband, and I am so happy I married my best friend
~Frozen yogurt is a perfectly acceptable Sunday dinner
~Jack in the box is not appealing in the least to me anymore, and I was happy to pass it up
~Sometimes changing around a busy schedule to fit in a new client who has already given me trouble works out when you see their happy face afterward
~Being glued to the couch after a long day of work is refreshing and does something wonderful to your soul

As usual it's Mingle Monday! Join in the fun over at Meg's!

On Needs

Happy Friday Lovelies!! I am up far too late after a pretty good attempt at hosting my very own Pampered Chef party this evening! I had a pretty small turn out, but I think it went well. My cute little round table was extended with the built in leaf, and covered in yummy goodies that I finagled the hubby into helping bake while I worked. Sorry, the only pictures I managed to snap in my completely too hectic day were of the mini French apple tarts right before they went in the oven, and that's not very exciting.

Remember, you too can own awesome PC items by going {here} and entering my name {Adrian Hernandez} for your host, then shopping to your hearts' content and clicking the "ship directly" option at checkout. Make sure you get your order in by Monday, that's when my show closes!

Now on to your moment of Friday Audrey wisdom! Wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone felt like this? Maybe we could end most of the World's ills if we were of the same mindset. It's nice to know that there are people like Audrey who give of themselves so freely to help others.

Happy Tuesday!

Hey lovelies! I hope you are having a great Tuesday! Just wanted to update anyone who is following my tri training progress, and let you know that I didn't drown nearly as much as I have in the past few weeks while swimming today! I use drown lightly, but often I feel as if that is exactly what I am trying to do, rather than actually swimming. I still can't swim 50 yards straight, and have to catch my breath, even for a moment after the first 25 yards before making my return. This is the second time Lexie and I have completed our swim and followed it up with a spin class. I must say, that is quite the workout! I'm training this way to make my transition from the swim portion to the bike portion of the tri more effortless and natural. We shall see how much {or little} it helps!

Another quick update: this is the last Tuesday the not-so-great spin instructor will be teaching Tuesday's class, and next week Theresa will start! Remember my girl crush from a few weeks ago? It's still loud and strong ;)

I'm hosting my Pampered Chef party on Thursday night, and even though you probably don't live anywhere near me, you still get to do some online shopping and enjoy the PC products right along with me! Check it out here, click shop online, then enter my name {Adrian Hernandez} as your host, and have fun! My suggestion is you have the products mailed directly to you, as mailing them to the host, me, would mean I would get to hang on to your products until we meet...whenever {or never} that may be!

Now for some lovely photos to make your Tuesday bright and merry, like the 70 degree California weather I am currently experiencing!

Fun in the Sun

"Let the wind off the ocean blow the spiderwebs out of my soul."

Micaela wrote that in the most beautiful blog yesterday, and I am now so attached to it you will have to surgically remove it from my brain to separate us. You can read the entire post {here}

Whelp, it's Monday again folks, and I don't know about you, but I LOVE me some Monday's! Monday's are my Friday. My weekends are usually jammed packed and very busy, so when Monday  rolls around, I get really excited to go back to 5 days of part time nanny work in the evenings, and my 5 mornings in a row of sweat inducing, heart pumping cardio! {hello, my name is Adrian, and I am a cardio junkie} As usual, you can make your Monday sweeter by visiting Meg over at Life of Meg and participating in my favorite beginning of the week ritual, Mingle Monday.

What I learned this weekend
~California is the place to be! We had sunny and warm 70 degree weather both Saturday and Sunday, and I couldn't be happier
~The Lexington Reservoir bike ride didn't get easier when I rode it on Sunday, but is was a lovely way to enjoy said great weather
~My adorable English Bulldog Marlo made it through a 3 mile walk! This required a ridiculous amount of energy and endurance for a bully
~There are Caesar Milan wannabes everywhere you go, and they don't mind telling you when you should be correcting you dog, oops!
~Marlo likes to play in water. I was quite surprised as she detests her baths
~Glee is back, and it made me so happy to watch after the super bowl!
~I have absolutely no will power or self control when there are baked goods in the house. I seriously can't stop myself
~My FIL used the Christmas gift we gave him yesterday--a flying lesson! He was so thrilled, as it's been his dream to fly for a very long time. He's going to take the course and get his license now :)
~You know I really don't care about the super bowl when I don't deem it worthy to bake or cook anything!
~My Friend Caroline rescued an adorable chocolate lab on Saturday, and boy do I want him! Instead of making my tiny apartment into a zoo and possibly getting kicked out for breach of contract, I think I have found a home for him with Nicole's mom Carol!
~The sunsets we have been having lately are epic.

On Integrity

Happy Friday, lovelies!!

As a hairstylist working in a busy salon with almost 30 other stylists, I know a thing or two about gossip, integrity, and how other's perceive you. I have always tried to say only nice things about someone or something, because I was taught "if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all". It goes without saying then, that I love to give praise, and lavish it on as often as I can to whomever deserves it at the time. I have been known to tell complete strangers how beautiful they are, just ask the waitress at Hulas in Santa Cruz who looks a bit like Malin Ackerman, and blushed scarlet and said I made her night by telling her this. I hope I am encouraging others to speak as positively as they can, rather than turn to gossip. "You catch more flies with honey than vinegar".

"You can tell more about a person by what he says about others than you can by what others say about him."
